Lidl finalise application for planning to build second Tullamore store

Lidl Ireland has now validated its earlier application for planning to construct a second store in Tullamore. Offaly County Council had sought further information before going forward with the application process.

That documentation has now been received by Offaly County Council and their planners will now consider the proposal which would see Lidl demolish five existing commercial units on Church Road in the town to pave the way for a new supermarket.

The company describes the proposed development as a new state of the art, modern retail store located between Church Road and Tanyard Lane. The store will incorporate a retail floor area of 2,575 sq. metres.

It includes provision for an off-licence area, bakry and creche. It also includes the provision of a new link road between Church Road and Tanyard Lane that will help to reduce traffic travelling through the narrow section of the Tanyard Lane linking into the Hophill Roundabout.

Lidl currently operates 153 stores nationally and employs over 4,200 people. They recently demolished and upgraded their store in Edenderry.

The company has confirmed that it will operate two stores in Tullamore if the application is successful as they already run a busy supermarket on Main Street in the town.

Offaly County Council will now set about considering the proposal.
