In its latest update this morning, Offaly County Council says that 'significant progress' has been made on clearing all major routes throughout the county but it adds that a number of local roads are 'still largely impassable due to snow drifts'.

In Offaly, all Priority 1 and the majority of Priority 2 and 3 routes were cleared on Saturday. All routes that were cleared were treated with salt overnight in an effort to remove lying snow and should remain clear today. See below for full details on progress on these routes.

The following roads in the County remain closed: Kinnitty to Mountrath Road, the R440 Regional Road and the L8001-1 (across the Slieve Blooms); L-4025-1 and L-4025-2 Kinnity Road to Roscrea is closed in Kinnity Village to Brertons Pub; The Whitehall Bridge in Tullamore town is closed.

Ploughs have been out since 7am this morning concentrating efforts on the remainder of the Prioirity 2 and Priority 3 routes and this will continue throughout the day.  Efforts will then be focused on ploughing routes to any isolated villages/ population catchments in the county that are not on any priority routes. The Slieve Bloom Area is particularly badly affected.
Tullamore, Edenderry, Birr, Clara, Ferbane and Banagher streets are clear, as are main access routes into and out of them.

The Concil’s efforts continue to be assisted by hired plant from contractors using JCBs, bobcats, loading shovels and agricultural machinery.

A number of local roads are still largely impassable due to snow drifts. Where feasible, local farmers have cleared some and Offaly County Council acknowledges their efforts. Offaly County Council are also asking businesses and householders to continue clearing footpaths outside their premises.

Offaly County Council is asking that no unnecessary recreational or social travel should be undertaken in areas where road clearance activities still need to be undertaken. At a household and individual building level, melting snow will cause leaks, may pull down gutters and people should please watch out for snow sliding off roofs.
