Offaly hit with fresh Status Orange warning for tonight

Offaly has been hit with a new weather warning for heavy snow on Wednesday night.

The county had been hunkered down awaiting Thursday's Status Red warning, but Met Eireann has taken the decision to issue a fresh Status Orange warning for a number of counties, including Offaly and Laois.

The warning remains valid from 8pm on Wednesday until 12pm on Thursday, just hours ahead of the Status Red for Storm Emma which comes into force at 4pm on Thursday.

Wednesday night is now expected to see fresh snowfalls in Offaly with Met Eireann once again forecasting "significant accumulations" overnight.

The snow, already sitting at around 10cm in Offaly, is not expected to clear ahead of the arrival of Storm Emma at around 4pm on Thursday. That weather system could bring 30cm to Offaly on top of sitting accumulations.

People are being urged to be indoors before 4pm on Thursday and not to take to the roads unless in emergency circumstances.
