End of an era as long-standing Tullamore business to close

Residents and shoppers from Tullamore have been expressing their disappointment with the news that McKeon's of Tullamore, a long-standing shoe shop, is to close in the coming months.

The store opened its doors in 1987 and provided more than 30 years of dedicated service to the people of Tullamore, who have been paying tribute to staff.

The closing down sale appeared in the shop window on William Street last week and it is expected the shop will close its doors in the coming months.

With news of their closing down sale, shoppers have been sharing their memories, with Mary Cleare writing: "I'm so sad to hear the shop is closing, it's been there for so long. I bought all my girls shoes there and my own shoes."

She described it as "another bad blow for retail in Tullamore," and wished luck to Michael and his staff. Another former customer, Mary Mills, said, "It's an end of another era in Tullamore with shops closing galore. It will be a ghost town soon."

Mary Ryan Hanlon said she was "going to miss the shop," while Anne Dack McCann said she was "in shock." "I will miss this shop. Ellen and staff were always so helpful. I wish them the best," Linda Kennedy noted.

Audrey Murray also reminisced about the shop's early days, saying, "I remember buying Amy's first shoes in there, and continued this routine until she was in secondary school. We purchased her first pair of shoes off of the lovely Mary Murray."

"Both my children got their first shoes here and most pairs after that. You cannot beat the quality and the service, the girls were always helpful and so friendly," Christine Delaney commented.

Most commenting on the closing down sale expressed huge sadness that such a longstanding business was to close. They lamented the number of businesses closing their doors in the town.
