Lidl's Bantry store which will be similar to the one constructed in Birr
Lidl Ireland have told the Offaly Express that their planned new store in Birr will take a similar form to the Bantry outlet pictured above.
The German supermarket giant has welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanala this week to overturn a planning refusal from Offaly County Council and giving their upgrade project the green light.
Offaly County Council had refused permission for the demolition and rebuild of the current store in Birr on the grounds that it may adversely affect the visual public realm of the heritage town.
Alan Barry, Director of Property with Lidl was happy with the An Bord Pleanala this week:
"We welcome the recent outcome from An Bord Pleanala which overturns the decision given by Offaly County Council in relation to our proposed store redevelopment in Birr," he remarked.
"This development will contribute positively to the local area and together with our architects and planners we have designed a development to the highest standards. It will greatly enhance the shopping experience for our customers in Birr, as well as creating additional employment in the area," Alan added.
The work looks set to begin in 2018.
