WEATHER UPDATE: Met Eireann forecasting temperatures will plummet further tonight

Further wintry showers forecast for later in the week

Snow forecast

It's going to get very cold tonight

While the snow has stopped across much of the county and there is a slight thaw where the sun has broken through, temperatures in Offaly are set to plummet tonight across the county.

Met Eireann is warning of severe frost and ice tonight and it will be coldest in the Midlands with temperatures dropping as low as -8 degrees. With snow and slush on many roads already, the freezing temperatures will lead to very hazardous conditions on roads and footpaths across the county.

The severe frost and ice will linger on Monday morning. Frost will linger in sheltered areas for much of the day. It will be bright with sunny spells but temperatures are predicted to be between 2 and 7 degrees.

Monday night again will see temperatures drop below freezing but Tuesday should see a respite from the snow with temperatures reaching 7 degrees but Met Eireann is predicting further wintry showers later in the week.
