Offaly man taking on challenging Grand Canal Run for charity

Offaly man taking on challenging Grand Canal Run for charity

On the 30th of July, Offaly's Damien Brazil will begin his fundraising run along length of the Grand Canal from The Grand Canal Quay in Dublin to Shannon Harbour in Co Offaly.

The run takes place over two days in aid of two charities, Irish Autism Action and The Irish Hospice Foundation. Damien is doing the run with friends and is inviting any person who wants to run/jog/walk the entire route or part of the route to come along.

Damien was a footballer and then a well known referee in Offaly and beyond having served on the National Referee’s Panel from 2007 to 2014. The now 49 year old will be attempting a marathon and a half on both days, 132kms in total.

Commenting on the run, Damien noted, "this struggle for me is only minute when compared to the struggles borne by parents of autistic children or families of people who are at end of life and required that constant care for which there is little or no state funding. We can make a difference. So please join with me in whatever way you can to bring back a smile back to their Faces."

The run will see us in Grand Canal Quay in Dublin on Saturday morning at 10am and proceed to Lucan Sarsfields Centre, Ardclough GAA Club, Sallins GAA Club, Glennons of Allenwood and onto Harbour Place Edenderry for 7pm where the group will meet with the Offaly Football Legends and the members of the current panel.

On Day 2 Damien and crew will leave Edenderry at 10am and proceed to Rhode Parish Hall, Seerys of Daingean, the “Walk for All” along Convent View to the Kilbeggan Bridge in Tullamore.

After that it heads to Ballinamere, Pollagh, Ferbane and on to Shannon Harbour for 7pm where they will meet with the Hurling Legends and members of the current hurling panel.

This is a distance of 135km along the banks of the Grand Canal and Damien commented, "Lord knows it took me long enough to get around the pitch when I was both playing and refereeing so as you can imagine this is a mammoth task."

Damien is hoping people will share and promote this event using the links below with your clubs and friends, or come out and run/walk a bit with him.

You can support the charities by donating on as neither charity is state funded. Sponsorship cards are available from Damien or members of the committee. There is more info and links to both the Twitter and Facebook sites on
