Jury expected to hear first evidence next Tuesday at earliest

THE trial of a man on indecent assault charges which was scheduled for Friday, April 24 has been postponed to next week.

It was expected that a jury would begin hearing evidence in the case on Friday but Tullamore Circuit Court has been told that will now take place on Tuesday, April 28 at the earliest.

The accused man, now 64, has pleaded not guilty to 25 counts of indecent assault more than 40 years ago.

The alleged victim, now 50, was seven when the alleged offending began in 1983 and charges before Tullamore Circuit Court accuse the man of continuing the abuse for two years.

A jury of eight men and four women has already been sworn in for the trial.

For legal reasons, the accused man cannot be named.

The original indictment alleged the offending took place between 1982 and 1984 but that has been amended to between 1983 and 1985.
