GARDAI are investigating a bizarre incident in Tullamore town centre where a car crossed the road in reverse, damaging street furniture and another vehicle.

Shocked onlookers were amazed at the scene which unfolded in the midst of busy afternoon traffic on William Street.

Witnesses said a blue Mercedes appeared to go out of control while in reverse, striking bollards and a tree-planter close to the Tullamore Tribune office and then doing the same on the opposite side of the street where it also clipped another car's wing mirror in the impact.

The vehicle then travelled down Offaly Street from the junction of Harbour Street and William Street before stopping when its rear struck a fence behind Browne's Bar and Venue.

It is understood there was a sole occupant in the Mercedes.
