WORK has commenced on the long awaited traffic calming and safety measuress on the approaches to St Colman's National School, Mucklagh.

As is often the case, the project has taken a period longer to commence than originally planned due to additional design requirements under the Active Travel scheme. This will now result in a more comprehensive and safer project.

Welcoming the news, Cllr Neil Feighery said: "I want to thank the current District Engineer and his two predecessors who met with me and school management at the school and for their commitment to seeing this much project through to the construction phase. This is a hybrid project funded by the Active Travel Scheme and Tullamore Municipal District funds.

"I am delighted to see the contract awarded to local company, Tower Civil Engineering.

"There will be disruption and delays in the coming weeks but I have no doubt that the safety improvements will all be worth it when construction works are completed in mid March."
