A new road in Offaly is expected to open in the near future as works near completion.

The Northern Distributor Road in Birr is expected to open to traffic in the near future. It has been designed to partly relieve heavy traffic congestion in the town by connecting the R439 Banagher Road to the N52 Tullamore Road, passing near Lidl and the Gaelscoil.

Work began in early 2025, involving construction of the road, footpaths, cycleways, and associated infrastructure, with the goal of improving traffic flow, supporting development, and enhancing connectivity in Birr.

Work is also progressing on the Southern Distributor Road which will run from the County Arms roundabout to Syngefield, past the new Primary Care Centre.
