THE 2025 Offaly Yearbook, where the teams at the Midland Tribune, Tullamore Tribune and OffalyLive look back on a year of remarkable events, achievements, and unforgettable moments across the 'Faithful County' over the past 12 months, is now available in the shops.
The Yearbook will hopefully delight and inform readers over the festive season and well into the New Year.
The year roared in like a lion, bringing some of the harshest weather Offaly had seen for some time with Storm Eowyn. Thankfully the emergency services and staff of Offaly County Council responded in quick fashion to incidents across the county.
For many the highlights of 2025 were on the sporting front with Offaly's spectacular win in the All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship, the minor footballers claiming the Leinster title and Shane Lowry's extraordinary performance in the Ryder Cup.
And that's not to forget boxer Grainne Walsh's successes and the emergence of Alex Dunne as a racing driver to watch, competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship for Rodin Motorsport.
The past year was also the occasion of celebration for many leading community groups including Tullamore Musical Society who celebrated 70 years and Tullamore Lions club who marked half a century of service to the community. The club also hosted the Lions national convention in Tullamore early in the year.
Four young students from St Brendan's Community School in Birr achieved the remarkable distinction of winning the European debating title, a truly noteworthy success.
They later were the official openers for Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival, which is still going strong and marked its 57th year this year. It was one of many successful festivals held throughout the county this year.
In Banagher the long awaited new swimming pool was installed this year. The local community has contributed enormously through a hugely successful fundraising drive and everyone was delighted to see the first phase of the project completed.
The new Gaelscoil in Birr was officially opened in June while later in the year Shinrone National School celebrated the 50th anniversary of its amalgamation with The Pike school.
Offaly also successfully hosted the three-day National Ploughing Championships in mid-September and the event is to return to the Screggan site in 2026.
Tullamore Show recorded its highest ever number of visitors but the event was tinged with sadness following the death of one of its founder members, the businessman and hotelier, Christy Maye, in June.
As 2025 draws to a close, the Yearbook looks forward to the festive season, featuring a full listing of Christmas events, as well as a glimpse of what 2026 has in store on the sporting front.
