THE important, congestion-easing Northern Distributor Road is nearly finished, the October meeting of Birr Municipal District was told.

The Area Engineer Brian Keenaghan told the councillors that the works will probably be finished by mid December.

In recent years Birr has become heavily congested with traffic and the new road will ease this somewhat.

The road runs from Tullamore Road to Banagher Road, passing Lidl and Gaelscoil na Laochra. It will also provide another option for parents driving their children to St Brendan's Community School each day.

During the June monthly meeting of Birr Municipal District the Area Engineer gave the Councillors an update on the project, following a question by Cllr Seán Maher.

“Mid August is the likely completion date for the Northern Distributor Road,” the Engineer remarked. That has now been pushed out to mid December.

During the October meeting Cllr Audrey Hennessy Kennedy said a lot of people in Birr are asking her when the road will be finished as they are keen to see the traffic congestion easing in their town.
