Offaly women celebrate as Athlone Town complete league and cup double

THERE was great celebrations among some players from Offaly as Athlone Town senior womens' soccer side completed a great championship and league double in Tallaght Stadium on Sunday.

Having won the League of Ireland Premier Division a few weeks ago, they added the FAI Cup to their collection on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Bohemians in the final.

Tullamore secondary school student Emma Mooney played the full game as Athlone Town held out for a memorable win while former Tullamore and Birr Town player, Isabel Ryan, from Carrig, came on in the 80th minute.

Another Tullamore girl, Aoife O'Connor and Lucy Fitzgerald, from near the Blueball and Mountbolus, have also featured for Athlone Town this season as they also challenged strongly for European Champions League qualification.

Kelly Brady was Athlone's hero on Sunday as she got a great hat-trick and there were great scenes when the victorious team arrived back in Athlone later that evening.
