One of the worst roads in Offaly is set to close for up to ten weeks for much needed works.

Works are set to get underway on the R-400-1 between Rhode and Rochfortbridge on Monday, October 13. The works will take ten weeks with the road set to be closed until Friday, December 19.

A detour will be in place which will see traffic diverted via Croghan and Tyrellspass. Offaly County Council says that the road will be impassable at all times during the duration of the closure.

Offaly County Council says it regrets any inconvenience caused to road users.

The reconstruction will involve the removal of existing pavement layers and the installation of the specially engineered foundation suitable for soft ground. It has been reported that the works will cost €1.6 million.
