Podium finish for Alex Dunne in F2 Sprint Race in Azerbaijan
Alex Dunne returned to the F2 podium with a third place finish at the Sprint Race on streets of Baku in Azerbaijan.
Having qualified in fourth for the Feature Race after a red flag affected qualifying session on Friday, the Offaly driver started in seventh in the Sprint Race where the top ten in qualifying are reversed on the grid.
He took advantage of incidents ahead of him on the first lap to move up to fifth which ended with the first of the Safety Cars being deployed.
In a stop start race with Safety Cars and Virtual Safety Cars throughout, he moved up to fourth by the halfway point of the 21 lap race.
After a restart on lap 14, he moved up to third but as he pulled back time on the two leading cars, he locked up into turn one at the end of the high speed straight and lost a position to drop to fourth.
However a late issue for Sebastian Montoya, allowed Alex Dunne to retake a position in the top three and he held it to the end of the race.
With the Feature Race to come on Sunday, he remains in fifth in the World Championship, 48 points behind leader Leonardo Fornaroli.
The Feature Race takes place at 8am Irish time on the streets of Baku.
