Stunning performance from Alex Dunne in F1 Free Practice in McLaren

Alex Dunne put in a stunning performance when given his chance in the McLaren Formula 1 car in F1 Free Practice at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

On a busy day for the Offaly driver who leads the F2 World Championship, driving Lando Norris' car, he clocked the fourth fastest time of the 20 cars on track and was less than a tenth of a second behind F1 World Championship leader Oscar Piastri.

On the radio after the race, he thanked McLaren for helping a little boy's dream come through.

The Sky Sports commentary team were full of praise for the Offaly driver saying it looked like a much more experienced driver despite this being his first drive in an F1 car.

He now jumps from the McLaren F1 car into his Roddin for F2 qualifying in what will be his third session on track today.

After the McLaren posted this video of a smiling Alex Dunne as he returned to the pits.
