Offaly motorist caught speeding on National Slowdown Day
An Offaly motorist is among those that have been caught speeding on National Slowdown Day.
Gardai are conducting a national speed enforcement operation, National Slowdown Day, which runs for 24 hours from midnight today until 11:59pm, Wednesday, February 26.
The motorist was caught driving at 95km/h in an 80km/h Zone on the R419 Derryvilla, Portarlington, Co Offaly.
So far this National #Slowdown Day, members of An Garda Síochána, along with GoSafe Mobile and Static Safety Cameras, have detected a total of 106 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.
Examples of high speeds detected include:
• 136km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N3, Lavey, Stradone, Co. Cavan
• 121km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N11, Timmore, Newcastle, Co. Wicklow
• 117km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N15, Coolcholly, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal
• 97km/h in an 80km/h Zone on the R772, Clavass, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford
• 95km/h in an 80km/h Zone on the R419 Derryvilla, Portarlington, Co. Offaly
• 93km/h in an 80km/h Zone on the R148, Ballynadrumny, Broadford, Co. Kildare
An Garda Síochána conducts a number of high profile National #SlowDown Days every year. The aim of National #SlowDown Days is to remind motorists of the dangers of speeding, encourage a national conversation on the impact of speeding, to increase overall compliance with speed limits in place nationwide and to deter and detect those that are intent on driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.
