A housing estate in Clara has been left without public lighting for the last five weeks.

This is the second year in a row for The Green to be left without lights for a period of weeks.

Bertie McMahon says', 'no one is doing anything for us. We have reported it and contacted Offaly County Council but nothing is being done.

"There are a lot of old people living in the estate and they have to hold on to the wall when they are walking along as they can't see where they are going. Some are taking flash lamps with them, one man has a light on a helmet on his head.''

Mr McMahon said he spoke to Councillor Aoife Masterson about the situation and he is hoping she can do something.

The Green is one of the oldest estates in Clara and according to Bertie McMahon between 70 and 80 percent of the people are senior citizens. ''It was built around 1939 and opened around 1942,'' he said.
