A MAN charged with money laundering was given the benefit of the probation act at a recent sitting of Tullamore District Court.

Craig Tyrell (22), Tyrrells Lane, Downshire, Edenderry, had been accused of laundering €12,647.89 at AIB, JKL Street, Edenderry on October 27 last year, the money being the proceeds of criminal conduct.

Mr Tyrell had allowed his account to be used.

Solicitor Aisling Maloney said Mr Tyrell had ''put his hands up'' at the earliest opportunity.

She said he had an ''excellent probation report'' and no previous convictions. He hadn't come to the attention of the Gardai since then.

At a previous court sitting Mr Tyrell had been ordered to pay €2,000 to the Acorn Project for a Barista training project.
Mr Tyrell had donated the money.

Applying the probation act, Judge Andrew Cody said he didn't ''quite swallow'' some of the statements made in his defence and told Mr Tyrell he needs to be very careful in future.
