A man in the Midlands is accused of assaulting a colleague with a meat hook at a factory after he learned he "was in a relationship" with his ex-wife," a judge heard.

Leandro Souza Ferreira of 2 Thomond Lodge, Ballymahon, Co Longford appeared at the local district court last week in connection with an assault causing harm charge at 3.40pm at Kepak, Rathmore, Ballymahon on October 12, 2023.

Sgt Enda Daly, court presenter, said Gardaí received a report of an alleged assault and on arrival they spoke to the injured party who alleged he had been assaulted and “hit with a meat hook on the arm and head” by his co-worker Ferreira.

Sgt Daly said Gardaí noted minor injuries, a small cut to his left arm and a small mark on his head above his ear.

"He did not require an ambulance or medical assistance and he stated he was hit because he was in a relationship with the defendant's ex-wife," Sgt Daly added.

Ferreira was subsequently arrested and later charged by Gardaí in relation to the serious assault.

Sgt Daly said there is no medical report, however, there are photographs of the injuries, which can be handed into court.
Judge Bernadette Owens accepted jurisdiction, which means it can be disposed of in the district court.

Judge Owens subsequently adjourned the case until November 12 for a plea or a date.
