Five people arrested after car carrying improvised explosive devices stopped near Offaly border

As part of ongoing investigations targeting organised criminal activity, Gardaí arrested five individuals near the Offaly border and seized several improvised explosive devices on Monday morning.

At approximately 11:30p., Detective Gardaí attached to Leixlip Garda Station intercepted a car in the Carbury area of County Kildare. Following a search of the vehicle, a total of 19 petrol bombs were recovered. Four adult males were subsequently arrested and are currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in County Kildare.

Separately, while dealing with the incident, Gardaí were confronted by a male in his late 40s who was armed with a knife. He was arrested, has since been charged, and appeared before a sitting of Naas District Court this morning, 3rd September 2024.

Investigations are ongoing, and gardai further updates will follow.
