AUBREY Claffey has announced his intention to run in the next local elections as representative for Aontú in the Birr Municipal District. Lusmagh native Aubrey has always had a keen interest in the political area and is very passionate about his county and community.
As a father of four, Aubrey understands the many challenges facing families in the local area and wants to be the voice for the people. He is deeply rooted in his community and is currently chairperson of the Local Development Association in Lusmagh.
Coming from a rural area, Aubrey has always been driven to uphold the culture of his community and to position the county as an attractive and affordable location to live, educate your children and work in.
‘’There is no doubt that a lack of housing or properties for rent is a significant problem for many families,’’ says Claffey.
‘’There are currently 2,491 empty homes in Offaly this is scandalous. Rent in Offaly increased by 17.2% last year and house prices are still hammering families,’’ continues Claffey.
‘’Basic access to healthcare is another rising issue which must be addressed as a matter of urgency’’ he stresses. ‘’Over the last few months, I have repeatedly heard the distress from many people in the Birr Municpal District regarding GP appointments and the lack of resources’’ Claffey continues.
Midoc a vital service in the town of Birr is gone and it's getting to the stage that obtaining an appointment for Midoc in Tullamore is becoming increasingly difficult due to the influx and the overflow from the lack of GP appointments on a day to day basis. This is a crisis and something Aontú will be looking to gain answers on to provide some reassurance to the people of the area. We can not and must not accept this level of service,’’ says Claffey.
Speaking after the selection, Party Leader Peadar Tóibín TD said: "I am delighted that Aubrey has been selected as our candidate in Birr. He will be a valuable asset in County Offaly and I know his passion and determination will translate into a record as a Councillor that the community will be proud of.
“I look forward to supporting him in Offaly in delivering for people who feel they have been left behind. Aontú are the only credible opposition to this failing Government".
