THE Offaly GAA players of the year for 2023 have been announced while football hero Seamus Darby (Rhode) and former hurling stalwart, Danny Owens (Kilcormac-Killoughey) will be the latest inductees into the hall of fame.
The players of the year award winners are:
Senior football – Declan Hogan (Tullamore);
Senior hurling – Cillian Kiely (Kilcormac-Killoughey);
Senior “B” football – David Dempsey (Ballycommon);
Senior “B” hurling – Peter Geraghty (Kilcormac-Killoughey);
Intermediate football – Shane Tierney (Daingean);
Intermediate hurling – Cathal King (Carrig-Riverstown);
Junior football – Jordan Quinn (Kilcormac-Killoughey);
Junior hurling – Stephen Fitzgerald (Ballinamere);
U-20 football – John Furlong (Tullamore);
U-20 hurling – Charlie Mitchell (Kilcormac-Killoughey);
Football referee – Chris Dwyer (Clara);
Hurling referee – Brian Gavin (Clara);
Handball – Declan Kilmurray (Fahy Handball Club);
Ladies football – Roisin Ennis (Naomh Ciaran);
Camogie – Sheila Sullivan (Birr).
Details of the presentation of the awards will be announced soon. The highlight of the evening will be the induction of the two hall of fame selections.
The players of the year were selected by a panel of local journalists.
Seamus Darby won All-Ireland senior football medals in 1971, 1972 and 1982, scoring a famous late match winning goal in the 1982 final against Kerry.
Danny Owens scored a crucial point when coming on as a sub in the 1981 All-Ireland final win over Galway. He won a second All-Ireland medal in 1985 and captained Offaly to their only National Hurling League title in 1991.
