Prison sentence for man who stole €800 worth of Captain Morgan's from supermarket in the Midlands

A man appeared in court for stealing 48 bottles of rum from Lidl in Portarlington.

John Cunningham, 22, with an address at 19 Lynch’s Park, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 was accused of stealing the bottles valued at €800 from Lidl, Lea Road, Portarlington on January 4, 2021.

Garda Sergeant Michael Tarpey said the defendant had walked into Lidl, picked up 24 bottles of Captain Morgan’s rum and walked out. He returned and did it a second time, said Sgt Tarpey. He said the man had six previous convictions and none of the property was recovered.

Aine Rushe BL said her client was pleading guilty. She said the man was currently serving a sentence and asked that his sentence not be extended.

“It is the first time he has ever been in custody and obviously very shocking for him,” she said.

Judge Andrew Cody sentenced the man to three months in prison from the date of the court appearance.
