An Offaly man appeared in court in Portlaoise for stealing three smoked salmon fillets from Dunnes Stores.

Angelo Dimurro, 55, of 20 Chancery Park, Tullamore, Co Offaly admitted taking the fillets from Dunnes Stores, Mountemellick Road, Portlaoise on April 6 this year.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant had walked into the store and took the smoked salmon fillets valued at €30. He said the man has 29 previous convictions which are all from the same date.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity. She said he had been shopping on the day and “didn’t appreciate” that he hadn’t paid.

She said he was an Italian national living in Ireland for the past 40 years and had suffered with mental health issues. She said he works as a courier and had brought €100 to court.

“I think the goods were recovered,” she added.

Judge Andrew Cody order the €100 be donated to the Cara Curley Foundation and he imposed a three month sentence which he suspended for two years.
