Cannabis-infused edibles in sweets packaging are circulating in the Midlands
Drugs which look like sweets have resulted in three children in Tipperary being hospitalised in recent days and Gardaí are warning the drugs could have terrible consequences if ingested unknowingly by children.
Parents and guardians are being warned of the dangers posed to children by the new type of illegal drugs which have been in circulation in the Tipperary and wider Midlands area over the Christmas period.
Three young people who are thought to have ingested cannabis edibles were treated at Tipperary University Hospital – two of them were described as seriously ill.
The illegal drugs can easily be consumed mistakenly by children or pets and can result in worrying symptoms which can require urgent medical assistance.
They usually are a jelly or 'gummy' type sweet, often in brightly coloured packaging, which Gardaí fear may look appealing to children who think they are a packet of sweets.
Local Gardaí said these new illegal drugs are worrying and warned parents to be extra vigilant.
