Offaly GAA Club Notes (June 11-17)
John West U 14 Hurling Champions
Clara GAA would like to congratulate the Clara/Brosna Gaels U14 Hurling Team and their mentors on their fantastic achievement on winning the John West U14 Division 7 Hurling Féile Final against Roscommon Gaels on Sunday afternoon. The final held in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe was the culmination of five games over the previous two days.
The team started their challenge for the title on Friday with a comprehensive win over Naomh Eoin (Sligo) winning 6-14 to 0-01. They followed this up in Round 2 playing against Cootehill (Cavan) in the Connaught Centre of Excellence with a convincing 4-06 to 1-03 win.
Following a quick detour to Knock on Saturday, where several hurleys were blessed and many a candle was lit, the boys travelled on to Castlebar Mitchels (Mayo) where they displayed another strong performance securing a 3-07 to 0-02 win. The three wins from three secured top of the group for Clara/Brosna Gaels and a place in the Division 7 Quarter Final against Athleague (Roscommon) on Saturday evening. Despite the hectic schedule of games, the boys stepped up a gear and had a very convincing and fully deserving win against Athleague on a scoreline of 2-09 to 0-02. Thankfully the team progressed to the Semi Final (Sunday) injury free against Na Fianna (Laois) and looking forward to yet another challenge.
Next, Clara/Brosna Gales took on Na Fianna (Laois) in Mullagh, Galway and were 1-07 to 0-02 up at half time. With Na Fianna failing to score in the 2nd half and Clara/Brosna Gaels keeping on the pressure, they secured a place in the Division 7 Final with a full time score of 2-11 to 0-02.
Having conceded at most 1-03 in their preceding five matches, Clara/Brosna Gaels were in a strong position ahead of the final against Roscommon Gaels. However, they found themselves down 0-02 to 1-02 at half time but they dug deep and turned it around scoring 2-01 in the second half with Roscommon Gaels only managing to add an extra three points to their tally. Final score Clara 2-03 Roscommon Gaels 1-05.
Clara GAA would like to extend a big thanks to James Farrell and Jasca Sport for kitting out the boys and their mentors with fantastic gear for the competition, and also to Assistant County Secretary Niall Gleeson who wished them all well as they represented their families, club and county at the Féile and gave the boys great encouragement and advice prior to their departure on Friday.
Also, Clara GAA would like to acknowledge in particular, the hospitality and generosity shown by the host families and the Castlebar Mitchels Club which will never be forgotten. This is what the GAA is all about. Every single player, mentor and supporter was made feel like a part of their respective host families and by the Castlebar Mitchels Club. As a token of the club's and players’ appreciation for the warm welcome, a selection of hampers promoting local produce was organised by Helen Flynn and presented to each host family.
Finally, none of this could be achieved without the hard work and dedication of the mentors Rene Fleming, Mel Doyle, Glen Corcoran and Sean Foley and the parents of the team. Well done to all involved and congratulations once more.
