OFFALY hurling legend, Brian Whelahan will host a tour of Croke Park Stadium this Saturday, August 27 from 2pm as part of the Legends Tour Series.
As part of the tour, Brian will focus on his successful and lengthy hurling career with Offaly. Brian, affectionately known as ‘Sid’ to Offaly supporters, helped his club Birr to 12 county titles, seven Leinster club titles and four All-Ireland club titles.
Before reaching the Offaly senior team Brian picked up two All-Ireland minor hurling medals and three Leinster U21 medals, including one in 1992 when he captained the team to glory.
In 1994 Brian won his first All-Ireland senior hurling title and was also named Hurler of the Year. Four years later he repeated the same success putting in an impressive performance in the final against Kilkenny and, despite suffering from flu, scoring 1-6 to clinch the title. His performance also saw him named Hurler of the Year once again.
Brian is part of a hurling dynasty with both parents playing for their county. Legendary status was confirmed when he was selected at left wing-back on the GAA Hurling Team of the Millennium, the only player still playing at the time of selection.
The Legends Tour Series, which started in 2008, has been a huge success at the GAA Museum, with many GAA fans flocking to the stadium to get a unique ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour from their hurling and gaelic football heroes. These special tours provide fans with an unforgettable opportunity to hear memories and anecdotes from the players who have thrilled Croke Park crowds on so many occasions.
All tours include a trip to the recently refurbished GAA Museum which is home to many exclusive exhibits, such as the original Sam Maguire and Liam MacCarthy Cups, as well as the recently opened exhibition, Dermot Earley – Leader & Legend which will run for 12 months.
Prices for the Legends Tours are as follows: Adult €15, Child €8.50, Student (Under 16) and Senior €10, Family €40. Booking is essential as places are limited.
