TWO Offaly players are among the 45 nominees for Camogie All Stars which were announced this week.
Drumcullen’s Elaine Dermody and Shinrone’s Michaela Morkan fly the flag for Offaly who competed in the Senior Championship for the first time this year.
Morkan is nominated in the half-back line while Dermody is nominated in the half-forward line.
Morkan was Offaly’s first camogie All Star in 2008 and she later picked up a Soaring Star Award in 2009. Dermody also won a Soaring Star Award in 2009 and this year was the second highest scorer in the All Ireland Senior Championship with 1-42.
Wexford and Galway have received 13 nominations each followed by Kilkenny and Cork with seven and six respectively. Clare (3) and Tipperary (1) complete the 45 nominees.
The winners will be announced at a gala banquet on Saturday, November 5 in Citywest, Dublin.
Speaking about the nominations Camogie President Joan O’Flynn commented, “This year’s All Ireland Camogie championship in association with RTÉ Sport has been of top quality with eight teams vying for the honour of champions. It has been a season, which will live long in the memory, marked by remarkable collective and individual displays on the field of play.
“The All Star awards recognise the magnificent contribution of players during the course of the season, from the closing stages of the league right through to the All Ireland final. The awards reward players for their outstanding displays of skill, athleticism and fair play during a highly competitive and demanding inter-county season. I am delighted this particular group of players will be afforded national recognition for their sporting achievements and I look forward to the announcement of the 2011 All Star team.”
