Portlaoise 1-14

Rathnew 0-12

The unforced errors that punctuated their display in that opening period were completely eliminated in the second where they put on an half-hour long footballing exhibition that reminded us why they are the bookies favourites for Leinster glory. This was Portlaoise at their clinical best, and Rathnew simply had no answers.

They destroyed the visitors after the break, amassing an impressive tally of 1-10 while conceding a miserly four points at the other end, and if they can reproduce the appetite and ability shown in the second period they will be more than a match for any club side in the country.

On the flip side of that however is the fact that in their two provincial games to date, they have only performed in patches. Against St. Patrick’s last week and again on Sunday they survived, but that mightn’t be the case against stiffer opposition.
