Offaly Ladies have found it difficult to adjust to life in Division 3 after their promotion last year as they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Sligo on Sunday
Tesco Homegrown NFL Division 3
It leaves them joint bottom of the table with the team they defeated in last year’s TG4 All Ireland Junior Final, Wexford.
It was Sligo’s first win in this year’s League after suffering defeats at the hands of Longford and Leitrim.
Sligo got off to a great start and within minutes of the throw in had scores on the board. The first score for the Faithful County came from a free which was converted by Orlaigh Heavey. Kym Furey was on hand to take two fine points from play after some good team play. Kym scored her third point of the half in the 20th minute from a free, followed by a point from Emma Corcoran but that left Sligo 2-7 to 0-5 up at the break.
The Offaly girls came out in the second half and upped their game. Treasa McManus in midfield had a great game as did Catherine Bennett in the back line. A penalty was awarded to Offaly when Claire O’ Brien was brought down in the square. Kym Furey stepped up to take it but unfortunately it was saved by the Sligo keeper but Offaly did add two further points came from Kym and Orlagh respectively.
Unfortunately for Offaly, Sligo kept the scoreboard ticking over at the other end and despite their best efforts, Offaly couldn’t manage to close the gap.
Offaly threw everything at the Sligo defence and was once again were rewarded for their efforts with another penalty after a foot block in the square this was successfully netted by Orlagh Heavey. The final score doesn’t justify the effort the Offaly girls put in.
Offaly will now play Leitrim on Sunday. This game was postponed last week due to weather conditions and is a home game for the Faithful, throw in 2pm with venue TBC midweek.
Offaly are once again rebuilding after winning last year’s Junior All Ireland final, and have suffered greatly due to emmigration and injury. This panel of girls are young and with only five starting from last year’s starting fifteen, it will take time and patience to rebuild the team.
