TOM Coffey’s Offaly side showed promising signs on Friday night against Laois in a challenge match organised as part of the official opening of the Mountmellick GAA club house.
The side showed a raft of changes from Offaly’s last game in the league with a number of players returning to action with former Laois player Mark Dunne a new addition to the side.
Richie Dalton, Niall Smith and Ross Brady all returned to the side with Brady making an appearancce from the substitutes bench.
While Offaly ultimately lost the game, they have another month to prepare for their showdown with Kildare in the Leinster Championship while Laois make their first appearance in the Leinster Championship this coming Sunday against Longford.
At one stage Offaly were eight points behind and struggling but they showed character to get back into contention.
