THE Offaly Senior Hurlers lost their season opener against Westmeath in Kinnegad on Sunday.
Brendan Murtagh was the star of the show for the home side hitting 2-6 including a goal in first half injury time that gave his side a 1-5 to 0-6 lead at the break.
His second goal came midway through the second half and gave Westmeath the impetus to push on for the win.
Offaly manager Ollie Baker was without the Coolderry contingent however it was still a strong side that took to the field.
Both sides were reduced to 14 men within seconds of the throw-in when midfielders Aonghus Clarke of Westmeath and Shane Kelly from Offaly were shown straight red cards.
Shane Doooley accounted for nine of Offaly’s points, seven from frees.
