Offaly ladies football was taken over by the Saints last weekend when the League finals were played with St Rynagh’s and St Vincent’s coming out on top
The Division 1 Final took place in Durrow between St Rynagh’s and Rhode on Sunday. The St Rynagh’s girls shone in this game with excellent play from Mairead Daly, Emma Corcoran, Siobhan Flannery and Elaine Stephens.
It was clear from the start that the Saints meant business, but the Rhode girls were not going to give away their League title to easy and with great play from Amy Kerrigan, Orlaigh Heavey, Mary Grogan Therese Hickey and Katie Killeen the Rhode girls stayed in touch. Rhode would have been in front at the break but for some brilliant goalkeeping from St Rynagh’s Laura Devery who saved a penalty from tcorner forward Mary Grogan leaving the half time score Rhode 2-4 to St Rynagh’s 4-3.
The Saints came out in the second half and took total control of this game with the brilliant Mairead Daly clocking up another goal and three points. This young lady is unstoppable and defiantly should be considered for a League All Star Nomination along with County and Club team-mate Emma Corcoran.
On the day St Rynagh’s were just too strong for last year’s County and Leinster League Champions and were deserving winners. The Final score was St Rynagh’s 7-9 to Rhode’s 3-5.
The Division 2 league final took place in Cappincur on Sunday between St Vincent’s and Shamrocks. The Saints got off to great start with scores from Brenda Betson, Sorcha Comer and Laureen Keenahan.
Sorcha Comer was then taken down for a penalty which midfielder Brenda Betson blasted into the Shamrock’s net. The back line for the Vincent’s team was magnificent with Shauna Cuskelly, Niamh Harte and Niamh Jones letting nothing pass them. Vincent’s put another four points on the score board before half time to leave the score at the interval St Vincent’s 1-7 to Shamrock’s 0-0.
With a strong wind Shamrock’s had the advantage in the second half but failed to use it. When St Vincent’s midfielder Emma Cuddy was sin-binned, Shamrock’s started to score with points from Bernie Walsh and Michelle Guinan, but it was too little too late and the Vincent’s girls came out worthy winners. Final score St, Vincent’s 1-10 to Shamrock’s 0-5.
Offaly Ladies GAA would like to thank Cappincur and Durrow for the use of their excellent facilities on the day. Thanks also to the Referee’s Kieran Groome and Chris Dwyer.
