Offaly added the Leinster Junior Football Championship to their Division 4 title on Saturday with a Linda Sullivan inspired 3-17 to 1-14 win over Wexford
The St Rynagh’s dual star was on fire scoring 2-5 on the day with another dual star Lorraine Keena chipping in with eight points.
After losing out in last year’s final to Louth, Offaly went into the game determined to be crowned champions this year.
Offaly charged out of the blocks and made the dream start with Linda Sullivan bagging her first goal after just five minutes to give Offaly a 1-1 to 0-1 lead. By the 11th minute the advantage had grown to seven points at 2-3 to 0-2 thanks to a second Sullivan goal and points from Lorraine Keena and Mairead Daly.
With Treasa McManus outstanding in midfield and the back-line keeping Wexford at bay, Offaly maintained their lead to the break and they went to the dressing rooms in Dr Cullen Park in Carlow ahead by 2-9 to 1-6.
Free taker Lorraine Keena was in fine form and at the start of the second-half she kept the scoreboard ticking over as Offaly steadily extended the gap between the sides.
The icing on the cake came late in the game when Mairead Daly brought her tally to 1-3 with a goal that removed any lingering doubt over the result. Daly was also named Player of the Match.
It’s Offaly’s first Junior Leinster Title in the county’s history however Offaly Ladies have a proud tradition of winning Leinster championships winning nine consecutive Senior Titles between 1974 and 1982. Hopefully Saturday’s win is a sign of good times ahead for the Faithful County.
The girls put in a massive performance throughout the game and they took the lead early and never looked back. These girls worked their socks off for the full sixty minutes in extreme heat and were rewarded for their hard work when the President of Leinster Ladies GAA Marie Hickey presented the Junior Cup to the Offaly Captain Siobhan Flannery.
