THis week’s Offaly GAA Digest with weekly notes from the clubs of Offaly

Clara GAA Club

Underage Mouthguards: The GAA have announced details of the forthcoming national roll-out of the compulsory wearing of mouthguards in all underage grades up to and including minor for Gaelic football matches and practice sessions from January 1 2013.

In addition, from January 1 2014, this rule will apply to all players at all age grades. The move to make the wearing of mouthguards obligatory reiterates the Association’s long-term commitment to player welfare.

Significantly, if a player refuses to comply he can be sent-off and players will not be covered under the GAA Player Injury Scheme if they are not wearing a mouthguard. The GAA’s Medical, Scientific & Welfare Committee acknowledge that the use of a properly fitted mouthguard is the best available protective device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports-related dental injuries and was centrally involved in ensuring the introduction of compulsory mouthguards in Gaelic Football.

The GAA have launched the official OPRO GAA/GPA ‘stock’ and ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards, a joint commercial venture on the part of the GAA and GPA. The mouthguards will range in price from €8 to €33 and will be available for purchasing through local retailers: Baggots Centra.

Any parent with any further concerns or questions is asked to contact their team mentor.

After Christmas, next years U8’s will start indoor hurling training in the GAA Social Centre (The Star) in preparation for the Tom Naughton U8 Indoor Hurling League, which will start in late January.

The school jerseys were sponsored by Donal and have been worn with pride by the boys over the years so come along and support this annual event.

A number of issues were discussed on the night. Treasurer Peter Lyons told the large gathering that the club was in a stronger financial position at the end of 2012 than it had been at the start but he cautioned that there would need to be a continued control kept on the expenditure for the year ahead if the club was to get back in the black.

The continued link up with Seir Kieran at underage level was discussed and it was agreed that it was beneficial to the club to continue it to provide ‘A’ standard hurling for the club’s younger players

Ferbane GAA Club

AGM: A healthy attendance of nearly sixty club members made their way to the Heritage Centre for the Ferbane GAA AGM last Friday night. As is customary, there was a robust exchange of views, while the reports of Chairman Liam Flaherty and Secretary Martina Flynn focussed on several key aspects:

(1) The election of Padraig Boland as County Board Chairman. There was a rousing reception for Padraig who became the first county board chairman from the club in the history of Offaly GAA. Padraig addressed the meeting and spoke of his appreciation for the good wishes and support he received from all across the county, and how he felt there were some positive signs being shown in recent weeks, despite GAA affairs being at a low ebb in the county at the moment. He also spoke of how he was keen to rebuild and strengthen the connection between the county board and the stakeholders in Offaly GAA, namely the clubs, the players and the people. Liam and Martina both congratulated Padraig on his success and thanked him for his constant support and advice.

(2) Congratulations to successful groups. The All Ireland winning ballad group team that triumphed in this year’s Scór na nÓg in Castlebar were congratulated, as was the club’s Senior Scór Question Time team that won Leinster this year and travelled to Killarney, only to narrowly lose out to Leitrim in the All Ireland decider. The various Ferbane/Belmont minor cclub underage sides that were so successful this year were praised, as was the Gallen Community School team that retained their Leinster Vocational Schools Title. Congratulations were also offered to Tony McTague, who will be inducted into the Offaly Hall of Fame at the GAA Awards in January, and to Kilcormac-Killoughey GAA after their Leinster club hurling success.

(3) Thanking those who played a part. Both Martina and Liam paid tribute to the various people that played their part in keeping Ferbane GAA running during the year. Trainers and mentors, Referees, committee members and volunteers in all the other local clubs, those who helped out with fundraising, Féile, the Lotto, pitch maintenance, the Gym, the minor club and all the other volunteers who gave of their time, their energy and indeed played their part in fundraising were all thanked warmly for the work they put in.

(4) Building Development: Ferbane GAA Club has been awarded €90,000 from the Sports Capital Programme, which was a huge boost to the club. Huge thanks are due to Kevin Gavin and Brian Keenaghan for the work they did in preparing the application, to Martina Flynn for her assistance in her capacity as secretary, and to Ger Keenaghan for his professional work that was completed at no charge to the club. Local political representatives Marcella Corcoran-Kennedy and Barry Cowen were also thanked for their support in the application process.

(5) Finance: The club ran at a small loss for the year and Treasurer Kathleen Foley presented a full report detailing the income and expenditure for the year. A significant fall in club lotto receipts was noted and both Kathleen and Liam spoke of the need to put in a renewed effort with selling lotto tickets and generating income through this primary source of funding. The club has lost several invaluable volunteers in recent years and more people are needed to help in this area. Anyone who feels they could play their part, or indeed who would like a subscription, is asked to contact any committee member.

This was followed by the election of club officers, and the following committee was appointed:

Chairman & County Board Delegate: Liam Flaherty. Vice Chair: Kevin Gavin. Secretary: Martina Flynn. Assistant Secretary: Lisa Doyle. Treasurer: Kathleen Foley. Assistant Treasurer: Pat Browne. PRO: Kevin Egan. Safety Officer: George Digan. Irish Officer: Aidan Keenaghan. Players’ Representative: John Mollen. Committee Members: Niall Fitzgerald, Kieran Coughlan, Claire Brady, Brian Flynn, Martin Dolan, Brian Keenaghan, Fergal Spollen, Kenneth Maher and Gerry Grehan.

After the election of officers, issues such as team management, the numbeer of junior teams to be fielded, club coaching structure and the issue of burnout in young players was discussed, while Vice Chairman Kevin Gavin also spoke of a club initiative around “The Gathering”. The August Bank Holiday in 2013 was mentioned as a possible focal point when emigrants with ties to the local area could perhaps return to a general celebration in the area. Further details will be released regarding this in the New Year.

Finally, membership for the year was kept at existing rates; €20 for a single member, €50 for membership with gym, and €25 for a family. All members are asked to get their membership paid as soon as possible, so as to help the club in planning for the coming year with regard to team entries etc.
