THE John Murray radio show is getting behind Crinkle hurling squad for the upcoming season. The RTE Radio One programme will be providing the team with coaching, will be drumming up local support and airing updates on crunch games throughout the Championship.
John Murray picked Crinkle and Carlow’s Tinryland from a deluge of offers following his call-out for a ‘struggling squad’ earlier this year.
Crinkle corner forward John Ryan put forward a passionate plea to the Murray team.
“The main thing we would love to get from the show would be to get people locally to pick up a hurl,” said Ryan. “We got caught in a hard-fought relegation battle last year. We pulled through by the skin of our teeth. This year we’re determined to pull up our socks and excel.”
Last year Crinkle finished last in their intermediate league of 12 clubs. This season they’ve recruited a new manager.
“This year we’ve got a new manager. His name is Martin McCarty. He’s intense, passionate, moreso than any of the players. He’s pushing us hard, and we need to be pushed,” commented John.
He continued, “There are two Offaly intermediate championship groups. It came down to the wire last year between us and Shinrone. We were six points down in the first half but went on to win and they were relegated to the junior league.”
