BIRR’s Local Tourist Office is to remain open this year. That’s according to Laois/Offaly TD Marcella Corcoran Kennedy who welcomed the news this week.
Deputy Corocoran Kennedy said she received clarification that both Offaly County Council and Failte Ireland are to work together and devise a plan to ensure that the tourist office also remains open next year.
She commented, “Over the past few weeks, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that the tourist office remains open and I contacted Failte Ireland to ask them to engage with Birr Town Council and Offaly Council on this issue. I also contacted the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Sport, Leo Varadkar, TD in relation to this issue and this co-ordination of all organisations involved has ensured that the town’s tourist office will remain open.
“In the year of the Gathering, it would have been counter-productive for Birr’s tourist office to close. Tourism is absolutely vital to the town and to the entire south and west Offaly region. We have many wonderful tourist attractions such as Birr Castle and the world-renowned gardens, Lough Boora Parklands, Clonmacnoise, the annual Vintage Festival, the Slieve Bloom mountains and Moneygall’s links to President Obama, to name but a few.”
“I am delighted that we will be able to continue to promote these attractions through our local tourist office,” she concluded.
