Cock a snook at the summer’s unpredictable weather and conjure your own personal paradise at home. Be inspired by your favourite holiday or dream destination and echo elements of its style in your rooms. Heat up the home with electrifying jungle foliage, splashes of sunny shades and a paradise island wall mural - and you’ll soon be feeling totally tropical. For the more sultry feel of a colonial plantation home or the rustic simplicity of a Mexican hacienda, simply add a few hotspot accessories to pep up a room, or opt for a total makeover if want the feel-good factor to last all year. Choose your vacation style from three ‘get away from it all’ decor schemes.
Create a colonial-style retreat by conjuring a laid-back vibe with a natural colour palette and carved, dark wood furniture. This scheme is ultra easy on the eye, can be dressed up or down to suit your mood, and interest comes from textures in furnishings, such as slubby linen fabrics and accessories in shell or bone.
Add a bohemian touch to a stripped wood or white-painted floor with a yellow trimmed Seagrass Square Floor Mat and a set of floor cushions to match.
Simplicity combines with charm in a Caravan carved wooden four-poster bed. It would be appropriately dressed in crisp white linen and sea-blue throws.
Blocks of bright colour are in vogue and perfect for an exotic vibe for rooms. This isn’t a look for the faint-hearted but there’s no need to be daunted by the prospect of using a cocktail of shades and rich pattern. As long as you use white for walls and dark wood floors as a calming contrast, the effect will be sophisticated rather than garish. Recall the characteristic colours of Caribbean beach houses decorated in flamboyant flamingo pink, banana yellow and lime green.
“Vibrant shades are so uplifting to the spirits and I often use them in my work,” says designer Chloe Croft, whose fabulous range includes art work, window blinds and accessories featuring a parade of animals from giraffes and tigers, to parrots and flamingos.
Mix it with Mexican
Conjure a foreign feel by picking up on an earthy ethnic trend for autumn, which is reminiscent of hacienda style. It calls for a paint colour palette of beige or orange for walls, and bright colours like reds, yellows, oranges, greens and blues for the accents. Oversized furniture is ideal, because comfort is paramount in this type of retreat, and opt for suede or leather upholstery, or natural cotton covers.
Display painted pottery, woven blankets, throws, pillows and terracotta pieces liberally, frame black and white prints of desert photographs to set the scene, and don’t forget a cactus!
