THE new Ford Mondeo is available in three body styles – four-door saloon, five-door hatchback and estate – each with three distinct series available: the Style, which provides a high level of standard equipment, the contemporary Zetec series and, at the top of the range, Titanium. The Titanium model has metal-finish interior elements and will appeal to those wanting a more contemporary flavour.

The Mondeo introduces some features not normally associated with cars in this class as standard, these very worthwhile additions give the new Mondeo a headstart over rivals before you even get into it!
Ford was among the first manufacturers to provide Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) as standard in this class. In addition to ESP, an impressive list of standard equipment for the Mondeo range includes a class-leading suite of airbags (seven in total – including a driver’s knee airbag ABS with EBA, Ford Easyfuel capless refuelling with fuel inhibitor to prevent mis-fuelling; ‘follow-me-home’ lights; trip computer; air conditioning; and an auxiliary audio input socket located in the glove box for external audio device connection.
More recently Ford introduced a low emission, low tax, frugal 1.6 diesel to the Mondeo range as well as announcing a new 4 year warranty, roadside assistance and servicing package on all new Ford Mondeo cars. My test car this week is the Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Titanium 5 door.
The Titanium spec car boasts lovely alloy wheels, and attractive chrome detailing. All in all it looks rather classy. The Mondeo is a sharp looking. It looks big, but has a very appealing design whether saloon hatch or estate bodystyle.
Behind The Wheel
The cabin is huge, very roomy and beautifully kitted out. Standard equipment on all Mondeos includes: next generation of Ford’s advanced Human Machine Interface (HMI) with on-board computer, tinted glass; a pollen filter; power heated body coloured mirrors, front electric windows, rear power point; a Sony stereo Radio CD player with A/V input socket (MP3) USB, and remote audio steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, a heated windscreen, air conditioning and the aforementioned host of safety features.
The Titanium spec gives the interior a very contemporary feel with nice titanium effect trim, half leather Alcantrara seats, power drivers seat, leather trimmed steering wheel and gear shift, auto lights, auto wipers, cruise control, 17 inch 15 spoke alloys, auto dimming rear view mirror, and more! I could go on about all the standard kit but the list is pretty extensive. Accommodation is vast with ample room for five adults and a boot you could get lost in!
The 1.6 litre TDCi diesel engine pumps out a very healthy 115ps and in my test car was mated to a slick 6-speed manual gearbox.
Overall performance is quite lively with good bottom end torque as you would expect from a diesel. This engine is pretty quiet too. Only at start would you realise it was a diesel unit under the bonnet. On the economy front this diesel Mondeo impresses with an average consumption of 6.1 litres per 100km with emissions of just 114g/km. I had a range of around 980km between refuels which is very good. Furthermore it falls into the lowest tax bracket which was €104 prior to changes in th elast Budget.
In general the suspension simply soaks up all road imperfections with ease. Handling is equally impressive. The new car is very stable in all road conditions and you really would have to drive in the extreme to unsettle the car. That said should you encounter the unexpected the standard ESP (electronic stability program) endeavours to keep the car on the road. This is a tremendous safety feature and Ford must be commended for fitting it as standard in all new Mondeo models.
The new Mondeo feels right in all areas, it is big, safe, comfortable, and extremely refined. It delivers everything you could want from a mid range family car. It feels a cut above its rivals.
In Titanium specification you really do benefit from the extra goodies which make it feel that bit more special. Entry to the Mondeo range starts at just €25,475.
There is no doubt that the new Mondeo has really hit the mark and in particular in this high specification version it is a true luxury car. The new Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Titanium cost €29,995.
