Portarlington Lions Club are delighted to announce the staging in the local community centre of “The Truth and the lies of an old Reprobate” on Saturday May 19 next.
The acclaimed play is based on the writings of Joe O’Neill, tells the story of Joe’s hometown of Mountmellick, his family and his own life “warts and all”
There are stories from his childhood, anecdotes, and reflections of life in a small town, the brutal truth of living through Alcoholism and its effects on himself and his family. He writes “I never drank for pleasure, always for effect”.
This production that could be performed in any part of Ireland or further afield, and loved by anyone who sees it.
Shay Flannery as the voice of Joe O’Neill proves himself to be a sensitive, authentic interpreter of a difficult but lovable man. This play was first performed in 2003 during the Laois Arts Festival and completed a nationwide tour that included the Dunamaise Theatre PortLaois, Naas, The Civic Theatre in Tallaght, The Helix in Glasnevin, Nenagh, Listowel, Dingle, Ballina, Donegal to mention a few.
Shay Flannery’s delivery of Joe is “Flawless”, he brings passion, sadness and comedy to the character. Shay is truly a wonderful storyteller and has a beautiful singing voice “One could listen to him all night.”
Club president Gerry Dunne said: “This is a follow on from last years “Lisa Minelli Life Story” which was a tremendous success with an audience of 250 people. The fact that this years play is based on a local persons life will be an added attraction. Shay Flannery has decided to relaunch this very successful play and we in Portarlington Lion’s Club are privileged to host such a play. This stage will be staged mid-May with ample public notice given.
The Show takes place on May in the Community Centre Portarlington. The lions club are keeping the ticket cost to a minimum in an effort to encourage as many people as possible to attend this highly acclaimed show
