New Subaru Forester confirmed for 2013

Subaru has confirmed a new version of the Forester SUV for next year, with a choice of three engines and two gearboxes.

The Forester is set to be faster and more efficient than the outgoing model but will keep the signature Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system that gives Subaru cars their fabled traction.

It is claimed that the cabin will be larger and more practical, although how so has not yet been revealed. The three available Boxer engines will be positioned low in the chassis to give the Forester a lower-than-typical centre of gravity to place it among the most dynamically capable of all SUVs.

Two 2.0-litre engines with 148bhp will form the backbone of the range. A diesel and a petrol will share the same power figure but offer very different driving characteristics. The flagship is a new 2.0-litre 276bhp turbocharged petrol unit, maintaining Subaru’s proud heritage of building fast four-wheel-drive cars.

The 148bhp engines will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while the petrol version has the option of a Lineartronic continually-variable transmission (CVT). The CVT gearbox is the only choice on the higher-powered petrol, partially because the car needs to meet the stringent 2015 Japanese fuel economy standards.

Haydn Davies, Marketing Director, Subaru UK, said: “Since the Forester’s launch in 1997, it has gained a loyal following across the UK for its rugged, go anywhere abilities and these developments will ensure it remains a firm SUV favourite.

“The fourth-generation Forester will feature the latest All-Wheel Drive system and Boxer engines, while a lot of work has gone into improving refinement, ride quality and safety.”
