Dramatic Solar Eclipse event to be held in Birr Castle Demesne

‘an incredible 92–98% of the Sun will be covered, a rare phenomenon which will not be seen again at this percentage level until 2090’
MEMBERS of the general public will have a wonderful opportunity to experience the dramatic Solar Eclipse on August 12 in the grounds of Birr Castle Demesne.
“Eclipse 26” will run from 5pm to 8pm and will be a very special evening, offering participants the opportunity to experience “a deep partial view of the 2026 Solar Eclipse”, with an incredible 92–98% of the Sun covered, a rare phenomenon which will not be seen again at this percentage level until 2090.
Set within one of Ireland’s most historic scientific locations, this unique event will combine live eclipse viewing (weather permitting), expert talks, and family-friendly activities.
The evening's highlights will include a train journey to the Great Telescope; a talk by an astrophysicist & solar expert; solar eclipse glasses for all attendees; solar telescope viewing (weather permitting, an alternative live feed of the solar eclipse will take place if the weather is unfavourable); face painting & children’s activities.
The last major deep partial solar eclipse visible in Ireland occurred on March 29, 2025. On that date the Moon covered roughly 51% of the Sun's diameter from the east, and up to nearly 50% across the rest of the country. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, and totally or partly obscures the view of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. In some ancient cultures solar eclipses were attributed to supernatural causes or regarded as bad omens.
Pre-booking is necessary and arrival is from 5pm.
Birr Castle Demesne says it's a registered charity “dedicated to protecting the rich heritage of its historic demesne for future generations, while educating and inspiring all who visit.”Further details and the full programme of upcoming events are available at birrcastle.com/events.
