Further prison term for father of boy killed in Offaly arson attack

Judge sitting at Tullamore District Court adds eight months to seven-year prison sentence after hearing Edenderry man was on bail when he hid cocaine in lane near his home
THE father of the boy killed in an Edenderry arson attack last year has received a further prison sentence.
Aaron Holt (28), Castleview Park, Edenderry whose four-year-old son Tadgh Farrell died in a fire at Castleview Park in Edenderry on December 6 last, was jailed for seven years in January for a serious drugs offence which he committed in 2024.
Mr Holt, whose aunt Mary Holt also died in the arson attack, appeared in custody before Tullamore District Court where he pleaded guilty to a separate charge relating to possessing drugs for sale or supply in 2025.
Detective Garda Joseph Bradley told Judge Andrew Cody that on March 27, 2025 when he was passing the junction of School Lane and Castleview Park he saw Aaron Holt in a cul-de-sac lane opposite his house.
Detective Garda Bradley said he was suspicious and later went and searched the area, finding a lunch box containing 49g of cocaine.
The detective viewed CCTV which showed Mr Holt at the scene and generated a DNA profile from the lunch box which matched a swab taken from the accused.
Detective Garda Bradley said Mr Holt had a total of 62 previous convictions, 14 of which were for drug offences.
The most serious offence was possession of heroin worth nearly €33,000 in Edenderry on May 8, 2024 and Mr Holt received an eight-year prison sentence at the Circuit Court with the final year suspended for five years.
That sentence was imposed in January this year and last year Mr Holt was twice sentenced for having drugs for sale or supply, receiving a one-month prison term on one occasion and nine months on another.
Defending solicitor Aisling Maloney said Mr Holt had been imprisoned last year and was not due for release until December 2030.

Ms Maloney said drugs and the abuse of drugs had run throughout his history and she asked that the sentence imposed for this latest offence run concurrently with terms he is already serving.
She said he was doing well in prison, where he was involved with the workshop and the gym and he had been unlucky the current prosecution had not come to court earlier because of a delay with testing.
The solicitor also told Judge Cody he might be aware that Mr Holt suffered a great tragedy through the loss of his son and aunt after being imprisoned and was refused leave to attend his son's funeral.
A father of three young girls, Mr Holt had a life outside of prison and she asked Judge Cody to consider not interfering with his existing release date.
Ms Maloney said Mr Holt had pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity and had dealt with the prosecution in a very honest and forthright manner.
After Detective Garda Bradley confirmed Mr Holt was out on bail from the High Court for the heroin possession crime at the time of the offence now before the court, Judge Cody said he was obliged to impose a custodial sentence and it had to be consecutive.
He said that given the early plea, and taking all matters into account, he was imposing an eight-month sentence which will commence on the expiry of the sentence imposed in January.
Mr Holt remained silent in the custody area of the courtroom and smiled when the sentence was confirmed.
The judge fixed recognisance for an appeal and also granted Mr Holt legal aid.
When the seven-year sentence was imposed on Mr Holt at the Circuit Court early this year, Judge Keenan Johnson said all the evidence, including “tick lists” amounting to €160,000 being due, pointed to Mr Holt being the main driver of the distribution of drugs in the Edenderry area.
Aaron Holt's four-year-old son Tadgh Farrell and the boy's grand-aunt Mary Holt were both killed when the house at Castleview Park in Edenderry where they were on the evening of December 6 last was firebombed.

Tadgh's grandmother Pauline Holt was also in the house and was hospitalised afterwards.
Michael Dunne (22), with an address in Co Kildare, has been charged with the murder of Tadgh Farrell and Mary Holt.
Mr Dunne has also been charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Pauline Holt and intentionally causing a fire which created a substantial risk of death or serious harm to four named males.
He is due before Tullamore District Court on October 28 for service of a book of evidence.
