OFFALY County Council has refused to allow two "pay to use portable waste compactors" at the Certa Service Station at Cloncollig Tullamore.

The decision was one of 5 conditions attached when the local authority granted planning permission for a development at the service station which includes an internally illuminated 7m high main ID sign, and solar photovoltaic panels to the forecourt canopy roof along with car parking and associated works.

Offaly County Council said: "'The pay to use portable waste compactors are omitted from the planning permission and shall not be placed on site."

The reason given was "in the interests of amenity and to comply with the provisions of the Offaly Development Plan 2021-2027 regarding waste transfer stations and objectives."

Derryclure recycling centre has several waste compactors which compress items such as plastics, cardboard, and general household waste into blocks which makes them easier to transfer to recycling facilities.
