Clara gets its first Garda Community Text Alert Scheme
The community in the Raheen and Aughamore have secured a brand Garda Text Alert system to help detect and prevent crime. The scheme is the first of its type in Clara and is the result of huge work from a local committee.
Chairperson of that committee, Lloyd Bracken, said there was great "community spirit" in the effort to secure the scheme in Clara, and he explained to the Offaly Express why it was needed.
"We felt as a local community that it was time to come together and make our area safer for everyone and the Community text alert system was a great option."
Last year saw an increase in crime figures across Offaly with a number of high profile aggravated burglaries, and the small communities of Raheen and Aughamore decided to take action.
"The benefits are huge - apart from the safety aspect - the community has really come together," Lloyd told us. "We have also conducted an area clean up and we will continue to try and improve our area going forward."
"Our new signage is also a welcome sight and it will especially give older residents peace of mind knowing that the entire area is working together to ensure a safer community," he concluded.
Garda Text Alerts have been welcomed in many areas across Offaly and serve as a link between locals and gardaí. Gardaí use the systems to warn of suspicious activity and vehicles and to issue important crime prevention advice.
