Offaly poverty campaigner launches Christmas Food Appeal
Offaly poverty campaigner Ken Smollen is appealing to local people to help families less fortunate than themselves this Christmas by donating to his charitable collection. He will be setting up a collection drive outside Dunnes Stores in the Bridge Shopping Centre Tullamore on December 14, 15 and 16, where people can bring along food supplies.
Ken collects and distributes food all year round, but is making a special appeal for Christmas. Smollen visits scores of houses in Offaly and surrounding counties every night as people continue to contact him asking for help with food.
Ken deals with each family anonymously as he says there is still a stigma attached to food poverty, and that many people ask him to come at night so neighbours don't notice.
To help these families, Ken is appealing for people to donate the following items:
Breakfast cereals, tea, sugar, tins of beans, spaghetti hoops, dessert rice, pasta and pasta sauce, boil-in-the-bag rice, packets of soup, biscuits, chocolate, cream crackers, selection boxes, christmas pudding, toiletries
If you need help with food, contact the Ken Smollen Food Appeal by texting 085-1432898.
