Portarlington's shoppers and businesses should be given the same status as their counterparts in Portlaoise, according to councillors for the town.
Cllrs Tom Mulhall and Aidan Mullins raised the issue at last week's meeting of the Port Graiguecullen Municipal district.
Cllr Mulhall was not happy with a response to his motion from council officials that there should be half hour free parking in the town, as is enjoyed in Portlaoise. The road section said the matter is 'being reviewed'.
But Cllr Mulhall said Port had been waiting for equality for years. He said it is very important to shoppers and small businesses who are finding it hard to survive.
Cllr Mullins seconded the motion. “What's good enough for Portlaoise is good enough for Portarlington”.
He saw no reason for a review and demanded that the coucil just rubber stamp the change. He also called for the half hour to be publicised.
County hall will spend €14,200 on car parking services in the Port/Graigue municipal district this year. Of this €13,000 will be spenton operation and enforcement.
