A NUMBER of local farmers have featured in the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation’s (ICBF) latest publication of the 100 highest economic breeding index (EBI) herds in the country.
The highest local breeder on the list at number five is Jim Delahunty, Ballykinash Carrig, Birr with an EBI of €165. At number 15 is James Dwyer, Moneymore House, Borris-in-Ossory with an EBI of €157.
The rest of the list is: 17th David W Baker, Killeen Farm, Birr €157; 25th James Murray, Derrinsallagh, Birr €154; 39th David Kerr, Ross, Portlaoise €150; 56th Timothy Fitzgerald, Green Road, Ballyroan €148; 67th Lorna Evelyn Sixsmith-James, Garrendenny, Crettyard €146; and 88th Brendan McGarry, Cogran, Lusmagh, Banagher €143.
The EBI is a profit index that was designed by the ICBF to help farmers identify the most profitable bulls and cows for breeding dairy herd replacements. It comprises information on milk production, fertility, calving performance, beef carcase and maintenance and health.
